Alumni Diaries: A Talk with Rohit Manan (Batch of 2008)

Alma Mater, a second home as also referred by a lot of people; gets everyone nostalgic. On 28th March 2018, one such moment was for Mr. Rohit Manan, Adv. practicing at the Tiz Hazari Courts and High Court, Delhi. Mr. Manan is also commissioned in the Territorial Army.

The talk was held in the Seminar Hall along with a power-point presentation, whereby Mr. Manan at the very outset asked students to be very clear with what they wish to aspire for in life. The concept of rat race will not help. Not everyone is crafted with the same skill set, and the sooner the students figure it out, the more beneficial it would be.

Further elucidating upon the fact that no comparison should ever be made by students especially when it comes to deciding a possible career or sitting for placements. The talk began with Mr. Manan highlighting the various options available with a law graduate, right after college. Whether one wants to take up academics, and pursue LLM or being a part of the forces by joining as a JAG Officer, he elaborated it all.

He had divided the entire tenure at AIL into 3 phases:
·         Life before AIL
·         Life during AIL
·         Life after AIL

Having sought admission into the college, students ought to have a strong feeling of Bon Home & Comradery. As it would strengthen the bond between the students, and the alumnus; networking being a key aspect of the legal profession.

Since, he himself was in litigation, Mr. Manan informed the audience about the importance and vital usage of procedural law. Be it the Code of Criminal Procedure or Code of Civil Procedure, one ought to be thorough with the basics.

All in all, it was an informative talk, having an alumni coming and clearing the mind of the students with his own personal experiences. Making “figuring out” life post college, a bit easier for the students.

ON REVAMPING THE INDIAN POLICE

It is the inbred duty of the state to provide for a non-partisan and efficient police authority that will facilitate in shielding the interests of the people. ‘Police’ being a state subject under the Constitution of India, the onus falls upon the state government to provide for a streamlined police force. Quite a few years have passed since the prominent judgement of the Supreme Court in the case of Prakash Singh v. Union of India [1] on police reforms exhorting the central and the state government to modify the police system making it more people centric than ruler centric but the ground reality seems to be unvaried. During our colonial time people had a fear of Police owing to the fact that the very fabrication of colonial police is based on wariness, and the image associated with it was robust but now that fabrication needs to be reviewed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the 49th Annual Conference of Director General of Police and heads of all Central police o...
